Men's Soccer Falls to Valley Forge

Men's Soccer Falls to Valley Forge

The King's College Men's Soccer team wrapped up their regular season with a hard-fought 2-1 loss to the University of Valley Forge Patriots out in Phoenixville, PA. It was the second loss in a row for the Lions after having won four of their previous six matches.

King's had the better of play for most of the game but just couldn't put the ball in the back of the net. The Patriots were a bit more opportunistic and took a 2-0 with lead into halftime with two goals late in the half despite King's having a 6-3 advantage in shots and a 3-0 edge in corner kicks in the first half.

King's looked to grab early momentum as Samuel Johnson fired a shot just 30 seconds after the second half started, and the Lions earned a corner kick about a minute later. Marcos Cabral finally broke the ice for King's with a well-struck ball just three minutes into the second frame to cut the Patriots lead in half at 2-1. The Lions applied the pressure on the Patriots' half of the field for much of the rest of the match with the Patriots only looking for sporadic, quick counterattacks. However, there would be no more scoring as King's keeper Seth Atkinson and his UVF counterpart  Troy Billingslea closed the door on any more scoring opportunities.

Max Pleban led the Lions with three shots, while Cabral, Johnson, and Noah Barrett each fired off two. Luke Kerley, Edwin Perez and Malik Syed each took a shot while Richard Cummings provided several nice services from the wing. But while King's held a 12-9 advantage in shots for the game, only two of the Lion's shots were on goal, while the Patriots placed just over half of their chances on target. Other than conceding the two late first-half goals, the King's defense of Ben Oldham, Becket O'Neil, Brennan Kitson-Jones and Edwin Perez was otherwise sturdy for most of the match.

Next Saturday the Lions travel back to the Word of Life campus for their Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Semi Final match against Five Towns College.
