Huskies Tame Lions in Women's Soccer

The pouring rain couldn't stop the Lady Lions Women's Soccer team, but the Word of Life Huskies did. The King's College traveled 4+ hours up the NY State Thruway to take on the Word of Life Bible Institute on Saturday as part of a tripleheader Saturday of sports action along with women's volleyball and men's soccer.

Word of Life came out strong and had a 5-0 lead at halftime while registering 27 shots. King's head coach, Bracey Fuenzalida, made some adjustments at halftime and the Lady Lions limited the Huskies to just 12 shots and 2 goals in the second half. The game ended as a 7-0 loss for King's but there was plenty of room for optimism.

The Lady Lions featured just one senior, Kaitlyn Simon, in the line-up. Juniors Callie Donaghue and Ana Doval returned to the pitch for the first time since their freshman year after the Fall 2021 season was canceled by covid. These three players provided plenty of positive leadership to the eight King's players who were making their collegiate soccer debut.

Lily Easterbrook looked like a seasoned veteran while making 14 saves in goal. Brianna Jacobs and Rochelle Thomas provide some breakaway speed on offense. The freshman foursome of Shayley Burroughs, Rachel Wells, Anne Short, Elizabeth Kelly with Abigail Adams could provide a strong core to build a team around in the coming years.

While the score might not reflect it, there was plenty of excellent passing combinations and possession, considering this was King's first women's soccer game in two years. They were competitive from start to finish against a talented Word of Life team and all while playing in torrential rain for much of the second half!

Next up is Five Towns College on Saturday 10/23.
